Casetop Makes Your Smart Phone a Laptop

We have an obsession with smart phones and why not? They are outstanding evolutions of technology that allow us to email, talk, listen to music, search for information and shoot cartoon birds at stick houses on the go. A smart phone seems a logical extension of our internet fixation and we welcomed them with open arms. The one gripe users may have with the set-up is the practicality limitations. Despite Samsung’s Galaxy S4 increased display size, tasks such as inputting large amounts of text with your finger are time consuming. What users may require is a physical keyboard and more generous screen space.

What is Casetop?

Livi design has created a device to address these possible user gripes with their netbook-like Casetop. A smart phone joins to the unit through a movable cradle, Bluetooth and video out port. Casetop is merely the body your smart phone is the brains. The design is compatible with most major smart phones including iPhone, Blackberry and many Androids.

Features

The Casetop unit features an 11.1 inch glass-covered LED LCD display that supports 720p video playback, a full-size island-style keyboard and a built-in 56 Wh battery that provides power for the unit and the ability to recharge your phone. It is easily shared between users as it works primarily on Bluetooth connection and the movable cradle or ‘front bar’ is merely a holder for the phone. There are plans to make the front bar more functional to include an additional battery pack, a touchpad and wireless video and audio functions.

Future

It is an outstanding invention that can literally turn all (well, nearly) smart phones into a laptop easily and anywhere. At this stage the device is still in its campaign mode aiming to hit its funding target of $3 million. You can buy a pledge for $250 to include a white casetop and two passive front bars. iPhone users will have to fork out an additional $50 for their model. A design brought to life by the power of 3D printing it is an evolution that will surely hit the market with a real splash.
