The history of Geek Pride Day
Some say that the prelude to the geek pride initiative began through a series of unconnected events held in New York from 1998 to 2000, which self-confessed gaming nerd Tim McEachern held under the name Geek Pride Festival.
Spanish blogger German Martinez took this concept one step further in 2006, when he came up with the idea to dedicate a special day to celebrate the power of the geek. Martinez’s idea spread quickly across the internet, and the world, after mainstream media cottoned on to the concept. The first Geek Pride Day saw 300 geeks gather in Madrid to play human Pacman.
What’s so special about May 25?
Geeks are known to be thorough people, so naturally May 25 wasn’t chosen randomly. May 25 is also famous for:
- Star Wars Release: The release of the first Star Wars film: Episode IV: A New Hope, which celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2017
- Towel Day: Fans of the famous trilogy, Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy, have dubbed May 25 as “Towel Day”, which aims to honour author Douglas Adams. It’s recommended fans carry their towel with them at all times on this day.
- Glorious May 25: The day in Terry Pratchett’s Discworld that celebrates the People’s Revolution. Since Pratchett’s death, it has become an impromptu Alzheimer’s disease awareness day. Fans wear sprigs of lilac in his honour
