This Women’s History Month, we’re taking a look at the influence of women in social media.

The 8th of March is known worldwide as International Women’s Day, and kick starts the beginning of Women’s History Month. This month-long celebration of women is designed to promote unity, and commemorates the importance of women and their achievements in each and every field. While its roots came from the United States, Women’s History Month is now commemorated across the world, with Australia being a part of the celebration since 2000. This month, we have been dedicating March’s content to women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics, or ‘STEM’, design and digital.

In this article, we’re taking a look at the influence of women in social media.

Social media platforms have grown exponentially over the past decade, reaching almost 2.4 billion users in the previous year. This is only expected to grow over the coming years, as social media has quickly become the most popular online activity. Facebook still leads the way as the most used social media platform and of the 14 million Australians on Facebook, women comprise 53% of that number. The largest demographic of Australian women is in the 25-34 age bracket, which boasts over 1.9 million users as of early 2016.

Australian women also claim the larger percentile on sites such as Instagram, Pinterest and Snapchat. On top of this, women tend to be more active than men when it comes to social media, cementing them as the driving force behind many of the internet’s most used websites. Social networking is a hugely influential platform, making the women who engage in these activities a key target for brands’ digital strategy and digital marketing efforts. The authenticity and high engagement of these websites make these influential women key brand advocates, and many businesses find success through encouraging these women to be leaders on their platform.

Women find themselves in 2017 with a clear edge in the world of social engagement. Using these platforms to promote themselves, their brands or simply to network, Australian women are expected to pull ahead in the coming year. An estimated 12 million Australians use social media every month and it is expected over half of them will be women.
