Instagram now supports portrait and landscape format

In case you missed it, Instagram has just announced that you can now share photos and videos in both portrait and landscape orientation.

Until now, it’s been all too common to see truncated versions of images when scrolling through your Instagram feed. For many, Instagram’s traditional square format has left users feeling cheated, with friends cropped from group shots and impressive skylines squeezed into abstraction. Not anymore.

“Square format has been and always will be part of who we are,” reads an Instagram press release. “That said, the visual story you’re trying to tell should always come first, and we want to make it simple and fun for you to share moments just the way you want to.”

What’s changed?

With one in five photos on Instagram posted in formats other than square, this jump to include portrait and landscape seems pretty logical.

Now, when uploading a photo or video, simply tap the format icon and adjust the orientation to portrait or landscape, and the full version of the shot now appears for you and your followers to enjoy.

To show that square format is still Instagram’s preferred orientation, it remains the default option when using the in-app camera to capture images and video.
