Serif or sans serif: which font is right for you?

Ask any web designer which is superior, serif or sans serif, and they’re sure to have an opinion. That’s because whether you realise it or not, fonts work with the overall design of your website to help establish your brand. The good news is that there’s no right or wrong answer to this question. Your choice will depend on the type of product or service you’re promoting, and what kind of impression you want your website to create. Keep reading to find out what each of these fonts says about you.

Serif fonts

These have the distinction of being among the oldest type fonts in existence. Many have been used in books and printed materials for centuries.

Studies show they’re also easier to read, since the additional strokes make each letter appear more distinct. Some common examples you might already be familiar with include Times New Roman, Georgia, and Baskerville.

Given their rich history, it’s not surprising that serif fonts are considered classic, elegant, and traditional. That makes them ideal for any enterprise you want people to see as tasteful, conservative, or intellectual, such as upmarket bars and restaurants, luxury hotels, bridal boutiques, and jewellers.

Sans serif fonts

A more modern addition to typography, these first became popular in the 19th century when they began appearing on Victorians’ tombstones.

While some web designers believe they have less character than their predecessor, others view them as simple, direct, and precise. They’re also believed to project strength, and increase customer confidence. Some examples you may already be aware of include Arial, Verdana, and Helvetica.

Associated with technical documents, sans serif fonts are often the most effective choice for scientific or technological industries like IT and engineering, and industries where virility is important, like construction and fitness.
