5 reasons why your website isn’t working

Is your website just existing in cyberspace? Here are five basic things to consider to get your website working for you.

In today’s market, having an online presence is practically mandatory. How else will your clients find you? How else can you make your content and information accessible 24/7? However, often clients come to us with websites which are just existing in cyberspace.

They’ve paid for a website to promote their business but don’t have a ranking on Google. There are five basic things to consider when fixing this problem.

1. Usability

Make it easy for your audience to find the information they need from you. If you have hidden sections, or the answers to your FAQs are difficult to find, your website won’t rank well. If you have a high bounce rate, this is a good indication that you your website may have poor usability.

2. Relevant design

Grab the attention of your audience with a great design. A design which catches the eye, entices them to focus on your content and move further into your website will get more attention.

3. Speed

It’s important that your website not only works and looks good, but that it works quickly. Every page of your site should load quickly and every link and opt-in form needs to work seamlessly to capture your audience.

4. Keywords

Search engines love keywords, so it’s important that you have the right ones. This is where knowing who your audience is comes in. When you know who they are, you’ll understand which keywords they will be typing into search engines to find you. This is the time to consider your SEO, particularly locally: if you’re a website designer in Brisbane, for example, it’s essential to have long tail keywords like “website designer Brisbane” prominently featured throughout your site (though as naturally as possible – Google will pick up on keyword stuffing and it will affect your ranking).

5. Calls to action

Once you have your website audience, tell them what you want them to do when they get there. Should they read more, click here to download, or complete this form? Every page of your website needs clear calls to action.
