Umbraco CMS vs Sitecore CMS

The world of content management systems can seem confusing at times, with so many different products on the market, it’s sometimes hard to tell one’s Drupal from one’s Joomla. Based on our years of industry experience, we can help you decide which product is right for you and we can start by comparing two excellent systems, Umbraco and Sitecore.

What’s different and what’s not?

Well to start with both systems originated from Denmark and both run on the .Net Framework. Each can be integrated with Microsoft Office, can be customised through the use of plug-ins known as modules for Sitecore or packages for Umbraco. Design layouts are kept separate from content so that you can concentrate on one thing at a time, and they offer both MVC support and ample off and online documentation and tutorials.

However, despite these similarities there are some pronounced differences between the two. For a start, Sitecore requires a licence fee whereas Umbraco is open source, and with both being designed for slightly different markets there their respective UI’s vary greatly. Sitecore uses an interface reminiscent of windows that can at times be somewhat bewildering whereas Umbraco’s UI is much more user friendly and simple to master. Sitecore also offers superior localisation options allowing you to simply enable multiple languages for your site.

But perhaps the most important stand out feature has to be Sitecore’s Customer Engagement Platform of CEP which allows you to connect with your customers across multiple digital channels.

So which is better? The answer is of course neither, both are excellent tools well suited to the task they were designed for. The rather hefty price tag attached to Sitecore is offset by the speed at which users can process data, making it most ideally suited for enterprise level solutions. Umbraco’s open source nature and ease of use makes it more attractive to SME’s

But rest assured that we’ll work hard to make sure that we choose the right package for your needs.
