What is Symfony?

Symfony is a popular set of components that is used all over the world as the framework for website design and construction and web applications. It enables web building in PHP and some of the finest applications to have been created on Symfony include Drupal, phpBB and eZ Publish. But it’s also much more than that. Proponents of Symfony see it, not only as a technological tool, but also as a philosophy and even as a basis for community.

What is the Symfony framework made up of?

Basically, the Symfony framework, which is a product of SensioLabs, provides web programmers with some basic tools, making their job easier and quicker. Rather than having to write all code from scratch, they can use Symfony to speed up and smooth out the process because it gives them access to two important elements. One is a series of software components that have been fabricated in advance and can be integrated without too much complication. The second is a strategy, or methodology, for putting these components together.

Some people might see this approach as slightly restrictive – isn’t it a bit stifling of programming creativity, to have so many decisions made in advance? This response is understandable; however, in practice, Symfony leads to increased productivity and, therefore, faster evolution of ideas. It saves loads of time, leaving us free to put our energy into exploring new concepts, and seriously reduces the possibility of error.

Symfony people and philosophy

Symfony was created out of the belief that developers can help one another – and ultimately the world – by sharing information. It is open source, meaning that anyone can access it freely. This philosophy suggests that we can accelerate technological advancement by working together, rather than focusing on being competitive.

Since Symfony came into action five years ago, it has become the centre of an important community of developers and programmers. This means that, if you decide to use Symfony to create and build your website or develop an application, there’ll usually always be someone online who can help you out, should a problem or question arise. What’s more, Symfony is regularly maintained and constantly upgraded – so it is forever improving, giving you access to cutting-edge technology and digital strategies.
