A beginner’s guide to Klout

If you’ve never heard of Klout, or you have but are not sure what it’s all about, then this post is for you. Here’s a run-down of what Klout does and how it can help you.

What is Klout?

Klout is a website and mobile app that uses social website analytics to rate its users according to their online influence. Information is collected sites from such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and Google plus. Even if you’re not registered on Klout, you can be found on there if you use social media.

Klout has now collected enough data to measure the influence of 75 million people online. That’s a whole lot of clout!

So how does it work?

Klout compiles a profile of your online identity and ranks your influence (Klout Score) from 1 to 100, with 100 being the best. Your profile includes users who you influence and users who influence you. The more influential you are and the more social networks you’re present on, the higher your ranking. You can use your Klout Score to build your brand. As a full-service digital marketing agency, iFactory uses Klout to gauge our clients’ needs and their online presence.

When you share something on your social media sites and people respond, you’re influencing them to a call to action, such as liking your comment or status update, or sharing content. It’s great to have a large following, but it’s how people engage with what you’ve shared that’s important. Klout believes it is more productive to have a smaller, engaged audience than a huge one that rarely responds to your content.

Klout Scores are supplemented by three specific evaluators: True Reach, Amplification Probability and Network Impact. True Reach is based on the number of followers who actively engage in a user’s content. Amplification Score relates to the likelihood that the content will generate a call to action. Network Impact reflects the calculated value of a user’s engaged audience.

How can you find out your ranking?

It’s simple. You can log onto the Klout website using your Facebook or Twitter account. A profile is automatically set up for you and you can then tweak it to suit your needs, such as adding other social media accounts that you have. Your score appears in the top left-hand corner of your profile.

How can you use Klout to improve your social media presence?

By increasing your Klout Score, you will increase your social media presence. You can improve your Klout score by consistently adding new and engaging content that will encourage your followers to comment and share. You can also improve it by joining other social media sites and sharing your content there. Klout allows you to monitor your content to see what works and what doesn’t. This means you will get a better idea of what content is the most effective for you.
