While every day is essentially Social Media Day, June 30th, 2016 marks the seventh-annual official global celebration.
Now, we are approaching the end of the financial year and it's time to celebrate. Social Media Day is being celebrated worldwide on Thursday, 30th June. From Bahrain to Trinidad and Tobago, celebrations are uniting people who recognise and appreciate all that social media has done for them.
Since popular tech firm Mashable announced the inaugural Social Media Day in 2010, the day to celebrate has taken off in all four corners of the world, from general celebrations of gratitude in a bar in Chicago through to a broader celebration in Manila that even includes seminars on pottery, yoga, surfing, food crawling and the sounds of live music on the beach.
Digital agency services like ours use the power of social media every day. But what has social media done for you? Before you dash off to book tickets to your next celebration (or you could organise one yourself), let's take a look at how social media has changed the world.
Whether you're after news in less than 140 characters or you just want to know what your fave celebrity had for breakfast, Twitter is the place where you can scan and hear it from the horse's mouth. Keep up with the news, find a job, start a microblog or just scream your rage at millions of people – Twitter has it all. Twitter is essentially our modern answer to broadcast text messaging. And, despite the short word limit, it allows us to see more of our friends and idols than ever before, because it's so easy that we can get all their expressions of daily joy, frustration, and even see their mistakes first hand.

Suddenly, you don't have to wait until your 30th high school reunion to see who's put on the pounds and who's married the school captain. Remember when you couldn't get on Facebook and see pictures of everyone you love, whether they were near or far? Facebook has been in our lives for the better part of a decade now and many of us won't know what it's like to miss the ones you love without having an endless stream of pictures and updates right in your back pocket.
And of course, there are as many social media platforms as one could throw a stick at now. If you use them and treasure them, whether it's your LinkedIn account or your Trello workspace, 30th June is the day to raise a glass and say thank you.
