Should your brand be on Snapchat?

Should your brand be on Snapchat?

With a bewildering number of social channels now available for download, it can be hard to keep up and even harder to know which ones should form part of your digital strategy. But, don’t worry. You can stop spiralling. We’re here to help.

In our newest blog series, we give you the facts about several social media networks to help you decide whether or not your brand should be using it. Where this series differs is in its focus on fringe social channels such as Tumblr, Reddit, Vine, Ello, Snapchat and others.

One of the first off the rank is Snapchat, one of the fastest-growing social networks among the under-25 crowd.

What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a messaging app for your smartphone that lets you send a photo or video to a friend that will disappear forever one to ten seconds after they receive it. There’s no doubt that the self-destructing feature is one of the most appealing features of the app.

Are my customers using Snapchat?

There are about 700 million photos and videos sent each day on Snapchat, from users aged predominantly 13 to 23. So, if your target audience hits that age bracket, you should definitely be weighing up the benefits of Snapchat.

To give you an idea of the brands currently marketing on Snapchat, here’s a short list:

  • McDonald’s
  • 21st Century Fox
  • MTV
  • 17 Magazine
  • EA Sports
  • News.com.au

Is it an effective use of my time?

Obviously the age demographic is a crucial point when deciding whether to use Snapchat for digital marketing. You also need to consider whether you have the time needed to learn the platform, create regular content, and cross-promote your account through your various social channels. The latter is particularly important as Snapchat makes finding new accounts highly difficult.

On the other hand, if your market is already using it, Snapchat can be highly effective, fun to use and drive considerable engagement. Remember, you don’t have to be on every social channel – just the ones that matter to you and your target audience.
